It is known that Saint George’s church once existed in the village of Khorostovo.
In 1780 a wooden church in honour of the Mother of God Protection was built.
In 1884 a parish school for 12 boys was established with the efforts of the priest.
During the pre-war years of the 20th century the priests of the church
were Kosma Fain and Ioann Loiko. Father Ioann was burnt in the church
with the inhabitants of the village by the fascist invaders.
In 1990 with a blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Filaret a
constituent assembly of the faithful was held in Khorostovo. In 1992
the congregation in honour of the Mother of God Protection was
registered.
The construction of the church began in 1992. Due to the charitable
endowments of the faithful and collective farmers and with the efforts
of the chiefs the church was built in 3 years. Priest Vladimir
Voroshkevich managed to finish the repairing works of the building and
the Iconostasis. In 1996 the Great Consecration of the church was
performed by His Eminence Metropolitan Filaret.
In 2002 priest Alexander Chernushenko was appointed to lead the congregation which now includes Khorostovo and 6 villages. Translated by Irina Zakharchenko |
